The Early Honors Program (EH) is a high school replacement opportunity for seniors to complete high school requirements by taking a year of college credit. During the first semester students will take college classes that are largely composed of other students in the program and then during the second semester they are allowed to take elective courses from general university offerings. Students in this program are assisted in applying to other universities around the country where they may continue their studies.
The majority of participants in the EH program reside in the Anchorage, AK area and commute to APU; however, a few students do come from a greater distance and stay in residence halls alongside other APU students. The arrangement between EH and the Anchorage school district ensures that students from the local region will be able to earn their high school diploma. Students coming to EH from outside of this area will have to make arrangements with their local high school before attending.
Because most EH students are commuters, there are few facilities set aside exclusively for their use. They do have their own study lounge, but for the most part EH students simply make use of the standard facilities and services available to the whole APU student body.
All students take the same basic curriculum, which ensures they earn a high school diploma in coordination with the Anchorage School District. The program schedule follows the “Block and Session” format of all APU courses, with “blocks” consisting of four week focused courses and “sessions” being 11 week periods where multiple classes are taken. Classes for EH students may be either exclusive to these students or with regular APU students depending on the particular class. In all cases they are taught by regular APU faculty and earn college credit.
Having completed this curriculum, students will typically earn 32-36 college credits and be prepared to attend other 4-year universities around the country.
EH students are welcome to participate in most of the activities and opportunities available on the APU campus, and they are encouraged to continue participating in clubs and events (such as prom) at their original high school, if those activities are of interest. Because of it’s small size and limited staff, EH does not directly organize many events outside of what is provided by the curriculum.
